Thomas Chavner and his town Gold Hill

Thomas Chavner arrived in Rogue Valley in 1851, and purchased a donation land claim across the Rogue River from the current site of Gold Hill.  But it was on his property that he and his friends discovered gold streaks in white rock which turned  out to be the Gold Hill Mountain mine.  Over 150 men staked claims.  He became a very wealthy man and astute businessman.
