Stewart was an avid Skier who had skied with the Tenth Mountain Division near the end of WWII. He married Anne McCormack in 1957, and they lived in Portland for awhile, and then to Wyoming. In 1970 he began working at Southern Oregon College. He volunteered for many organizations.
